Heeeey loves, it’s September which means it’s time to start prepping for NANOWRIMO. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, don’t worry, I got you.
NANOWRIMO stands for National Novel Writing Month which happens between November 1st and 30th, a whole month dedicated to writing and finishing that novel you’ve always been procrastinating about. (Admit it, we’ve all done it at least once or twice or a million times 😂)
On November 1st participants begin working towards the goal of writing a 50,000 word novel by 11:59 PM on November 30th. Now I know what you’re thinking, “I CAN’T WRITE A WHOLE NOVEL IN JUST ONE MONTH, IT’S IMPOSSIBLE”
and to that I say.
OF COURSE YOU CAN. YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO. WITH A LITTLE HELP OF COURSE.
Is it really possible?
I remember wondering the same thing when I joined in 2018. It was a daunting task. I had never done anything like it before. Yes, I’d done so many drafts but they were all unfinished and unimpressive. How was I supposed to complete a whole novel in just a month? Well fast forward to almost a year after, I’m glad to say that I did. I won my very first NANOWRIMO so it’s not just some cock and bull story guys. Yes… It’s actually possible.
And I even snagged myself a couple of badges while at it.
I’ve always been a teacher’s pet so gold stars and rewards are a big deal for me. But it was more the reality that it is possible that really made the win grand for me. Even though I had never done it before, I tried it and it was hard I’ll admit that, but I pushed through and I won, and you can win too.
National Novel Writing Month believes in the transformational power of creativity. We provide the structure, community, and encouragement to help people find their voices, achieve creative goals, and build new worlds—on and off the page.
There’s nothing as powerful as thousands of minds united in a common goal. It gets hard to stand alone as a writer but for one month at least, we all come together from all over the world and rally each other on. Trust me, you do not want to miss out on such an amazing opportunity. Win or lose, you will not regret it.
How do I join?
After you set up your profile,
Figure out a title, cover page and short synopsis (that again, you can always change later, so no pressure) the next step is to;
Mine is Africa : Kenya in which I am as of quite recently a Municipal Liaison meaning that in my region or otherwise, I’m always glad to be of help in any way that I can, so feel free to reach me on my email firstname.lastname@example.org.
For those especially hard days, you can look forward to,
And you can also chew through a library of writing tips, podcasts, blog posts, videos etc to boost and encourage you to keep pushing past writer’s block and all. Another reason to do this because everyone who has put out all of this helpful information is rooting for you. They did it and they want you to do it too. So get ready to
And then of course when the journey is at its end and you have actually done it like I did. You get to
And trust me, even if nobody else knows, that win will mean everything to you… EVERYTHING.
So I know, it can be scary putting yourself out there especially with so many amazing writers out there, but from one writer to another, your journey is the most important thing, everything else is neither here nor there. So take a chance.
No one has to see what you have written come November 30th. Consider it your personal journey. This is your chance to do that first draft and finally finish it. Once you do that, you’ll find that doing it again and again and again will not be quite as hard as you thought.
So what do you say? Let’s do this thing. Let’s finally finish that first draft together, how about that?
